Hi,

I guess I'm at the right place to post, but tell please me if it's not the case.

I 've seen a couple of emails in this forum on how to use/extend Zenoss as a
full CMDB solution, but it's still unclear to me if Zenoss is a good platform
to build a full CMDB, at least the way it's meant to be in ITIL. I understand
that Zenoss may not have been designed initially for that purpose, but it's
growing well and maybe also in this direction...

Here's what we want to do :

A. Support the change mangement process, mainly the change impact assessment of
application-driven or technology-driven changes.

B. Support the problem resolution process, mainly by helping the
troubleshooters to zero-in rapidly to the root-cause of a problem.

C. Support the asset management process, by keeping various informations
related to an asset, hardware or software.

Here's how we intend to do it :

1. Get an inventory of our main IT assets in a database, from applications (or
business services) to the hardware beneath, through all the middleware layers.

2. Get in the database the major relations/dependencies between those assets.

3. Query the database (depency trees) to get the potential impacts when we plan
changes. I guess we could also call it what-if scenarios.

4. Drill-down the database to access some information and/or get various
reports about all those IT assets.

So here it is :

i. Would Zenoss be an appropriate tool for the job?

ii. Alone or with something else?

iii. For the application management also, or only the infrastructure management?

Thanks,

Louis
