I'm pretty sure that zenoss just doesn't like the interface to be named vmnet8. I added a new interface manually (in zenoss) and gave it a tun designation (I used this instead of eth since I figured naming it after a *real* device was likely to throw someone off in the future) and set it's IP 10.2.3.1/24 and the network was correctly calculated and now my Network map works!! I did have to lock the interface because remodeling deleted it the first time.
