You don't mention if you know anything about Linux/unix or DOS level stuff so if this seems 'insulting' please don't take it that way...
For the simple tests, try this: Login as root in the VMWare console window and type ifconfig, and if it looks ok, then ping an address that you know exists on the local network. If it works, try one that you have to go through a gateway address. Next use a name registered in your DNS .. You get the idea...
