You're going to want to get more familiar with SNMP. I suggest doing a 'man snmpwalk'. It's actually very informative. You also need some basic SNMP and system level troubleshooting skiils. (tcpdump udp port 161, checking logs, etc...) Unfortunately, systems monitoring tools require a lot of in depth knowledge of operating systems, protocols (SNMP, TCP, UDP), programming/scripting, troubleshooting and then some. If you're not a seasoned sysadmin, there's a huge learning curve. Hang in there and ask all you can on this forum.
