Yeah Zenoss documentation is a bit lacking, but after a couple weeks in Zenoss
something will click and it will all start making sense.

Here's some basics that I wish I had known off the bat:

1.) Everything is organized hierarchically! Devices will inherit the properties
set at the highest level of the hierarchy first. So for example, if you don't
want to use an auto-discovery, you probably want to turn off that zproperty in
/Networks.

2.) Define some Classes! You should create your organization system before you
add all the devices. So set up your Locations tree, your Devices tree, your
Networks tree, and your Groups & Systems trees (If you want to use them) etc.
That way when you manually add the device all you have to do is assign it a
Location, a Device class, and it will automatically inherit all the config you
have associated with that class.

3.) Templates and binding templates to device classes is key! You definitely
want to read the chapter in the Admin Guide on setting up templates...

4.) You need to become familiar with SNMP. If you didnt know what an SNMP
community is, then that shows your SNMP knowledge is lacking. Get familiar with
MIBs, OIDs, walking trees, walking tables, etc. You'll need this knowledge to
build templates.

5.) Lastly, just play around with it. You'll learn a lot if you just experiment
with everything in Zenoss. You'll do things wrong and you won't always
understand what you're doing but you'll only gain from it.

Good luck!
