I don't know about how often you have to poll, but the only way to 
change polling times I know of is under the collectors settings, and 
it's pretty much a global setting for that collector. You might be able 
to create another localhost collector with a different polling time that 
you assigned those devices to to distribute load a little, and keep most 
SNMP polling less often.
