I had exactly the same problem on openSUSE. Strangely enough process monitoring worked fine for my SLES and Gentoo machines. It turns out that openSUSE 11.1 doesn't report anything in hrSWRunPath, which is what Zenoss looks for when monitoring processes. It sounds like your machines may have the same problem.
