I have installed Zenoss on Jaunty numerous times with no issue, I too edit the sources.list file and install with apt-get, it has always done so without an y issues.
I create a Zenoss user and do everything in there, however, when I add zenpacks, I have to use sudo, then the zenpack folder has root only privileges, I then reapply root:zenoss privileges recursively to that folder and it solves it.
