For today's exercise, I reinstalled Ubuntu zenoss-stack (2.4.2), then backed up Zope (no perf data and no events), and restored it to the new system.
The permissions problem went for the ride. I create a user, and could add/view devices, restored the production Zope DB into my test instance, and the permissions broke again.
