Observers find persistent media repression in Maldives

An international team of press freedom advocates recently visited Maldives, and afterward condemned the frequent attacks and harassment in the country.

In a statement released May 6, the International Press Freedom Mission to Maldives noted that the government has committed to better protecting free _expression_. But the authorities have a long way to go, the mission said, and they can start by ending the arbitrary arrests, detentions, and other intimidation against journalists.

The mission included representatives of Article 19, the International Federation of Journalists, International Media Support, Reporters Without Borders, and the South Asia Press Commission.

The visit took place during a World Press Freedom Day celebration on May 3, when three mission representatives were assaulted by police (see IJNet article). The mission also met with various officials, journalists, and civil society groups.

Article 19 also released an analysis on the Maldives government's Freedom of the Press Bill. Contrary to the name of the proposed law, Article 19 said the bill includes too many broad restrictions that would fall considerably short of international standards.
