BANGLADESH: Arrest warrants against 7 CU students 'Sangram' correspondent Mohiuddin Tipu among those issued an arrest warrant for August clash between students and police at Chittagong University The Daily Star Thursday, November 1, 2007 A Chittagong court yesterday issued arrest warrants against seven students and two employees of Chittagong University who are accused in a case filed in connection with the August 22 violence on the campus. Sub Inspector (SI) Anisur Rahman of Hathazari Police Station filed the case on August 26 against 1400 or 1500 students and outsiders. Investigation Officer (IO) Wahiduzzaman submitted the charge sheet on October 20 against 10 accused -- seven student leaders, an officer, an employee and a university reporter. Judge Mohammad Moniruzzaman of the Cognisance Court -2 yesterday accepted the charge sheet and issued the arrest warrants. The court also rejected a bail petition for an arrested accused, Bijoy Kumar Das, and fixed November 18 as the next date for hearing on the case. Of the 10 accused, the police arrested CU Bangladesh Chhatra Union (BCU) President Monti Baishnab on September 18 and Samajtantrik Chhatra Front (SCF) activist Bijoy Kumar Das on September 2. Bijoy is still behind the bar while Monti was released on bail on the night of her arrest because of illness and remained at large since then, sources said. The arrest warrants were issued against SCF leaders Kanchan Sarker, Zamir Uddin Russell, Moni Dipa Bhattacharya and Mezbah Uddin, BCU leader Monti Baishnob, BCL leader Jahid Hasan Jewel, CU Correspondent of the daily Sangram Mohiuddin Tipu, President of CU Officer's Association Zaker Ahmed and General Secretary of Employees' Union Nazim Uddin.
