Wow! Ron. my dad retired from office only an year ago and reading thru your poem I could actually visualise him, lonely and lost in memories like an old typewriter, which is useful (in fact, valuable, i must say!) but lying unutilised now, since the new generation has rejected them. I liked your casual approach too. thanks for sharing!!
 
Do read up my poems if you could spare some time. have put up a few of them in Zest.

MEMORY

 

Once I compared my father,

after his retirement,

with the manual Remington

typewriter in

our office, which now lies unused,

in one corner.

Its keys, with their worn out alphabets

could, surely, only cobble together

text of a forgotten lexicon.

 

Our office, for your information,

has PCs now,

with 40 gigabytes of memory

and a RAM of 256 MB

multimedia keyboard, the works;

and I am about to get my laptop soon.

 

The comparison in a way was

wrong though.

The realisation dawned when

I saw him rewriting and editing

his old crumpled diary, rifling through

his old yellowing letters

dwelling on his past,

summoning an entire history

in that frown of his;

his favourite daughter now

"married off",

looking very alone

in one corner of his study - a

manual typewriter

with a

million gigabytes of memories.
