Sorry if I am still confused, but...

CD drives do not show on the desktop unless a CD is inserted and
mounted by the Finder.

So, if you insert a CD into the drive and it does not "mount"
then there are a couple of possibilities.

You could be missing the driver for the CD-Drive.

The drive could be defective.

What happens if you press the button on the front of the drive?
Does the tray slide out?

If you insert a CD into the drive and press on the front of the
tray, does the drive door close?

After the tray slides inside the machine, the drive should spin
up and then the CD should "mount" on the desktop.

So, more info really needed to understand the problem.
