I ended up going with Hardy (8.04) over Jaunty (9.04) because Jaunty's
end-of-life occurs this October, while Hardy is supported until April 2011
for the desktop version and until April 2013 (!) for the server version,
which I use. However, I'm not really sure what "supported" means; I'm
guessing it has to do with security updates and backports.

If anyone is able to boot the alternate, server, or netboot versions of
Lucid (10.04), I'd greatly appreciate hearing about how they did it. I've
only had luck with the standard desktop version.
