Tonight I turned the key in my '98 528 and it rotated freely. I did some jiggling and made sure the steering wasn't resting against the steering lock and tried again with success. It worked fine again later too. The question is, given that some little tab or nubbin is now probably broken off in there, how long do I have before this thing just doesn't work at all? Also, can I replace this item myself? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Dec 2006 17:52:09 -0800 From: John Bolhuis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com Subject: Re: <e39> ignition cylinder got loose on me Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> On Thu, Dec 07, 2006 at 05:35:14PM -0800, David Thomas wrote: > If its the same as the e36 cylinders, you may not have long at all. > They have a very small tab that breaks off when its forced and now > only friction is allowing it to work. ooh, your mention of it being an e36 problem as well got me better search results - here's part of Brett's post from last year as a refresher: <blockquote> When the cylinder is freewheeling intermittently, it's because the broken tab is providing enough friction to hold the cylinder in place much of the time. If you ignore this, you will end up grinding down the tab until you have a permanent freewheel situations. Once this occurs, it's impossible to remove the lock cylinder using the standard method. You have two other choices. 1. Drill it out, but good luck because no drill bit I have is hard/sharp enough to even scratch the cylinder, and 2. Replace the lock cylinder and steering lock assembly as a unit. More $$ that way. List price on the cylinder is $71.50 I think. It has to be special ordered to your VIN (from Jan 95 production) and you will need to supply your shop with a copy of your registration and driver's license (matching names) in order to place the order. </blockquote> Thanks! I will order new part ASAP. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Dec 2006 18:17:06 -0800 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "[uucdigest]" <bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com> Subject: Head set without the head gasket Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Can an E36 top end gasket set be bought without the head gasket? tia, Barry ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Dec 2006 18:43:59 -0800 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com Subject: Yea right Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Why the Porsche tiller on a BMW? http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/car/245216975.html =-Kevin ---------------------------------------------------------------- This e-mail communication is confidential and is intended only for the individual(s) or entity named above and others who have been specifically authorized to receive it. The crack almost always develops between a water jacket and a valve opening. The visible part of the crack can be repaired, but the crack will extend deep into the head and will show up again in the future. BTDT. It's not worth the risk of doing the head job again in a few months. Not successfully. There are any number of business names duplicated all over the US and internationally. My business name is trademarked in NC, but it means nothing out of state. Also, if the OLDER company is not incorporated, and the newer company incorporates, or trademarks the name, then the older company will have to sue to try to stop the newer company from using the name. A proof of damage would have to be made, and a claim of prior use may or may not win in court. An expensive route to take.
