April 23 , 2012

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
------------

     4/25: A SANDHILL CRANE was observed at VanDyne Spoor Road.
     4/26: Both YELLOWLEGS were seen at the Visitor’s Center. WILSON’S SNIPE 
and PECTORAL SANDPIPER were seen in LaRue’s Lagoon. 76 DUNLIN were seen at 
Benning Marsh. These species continued to be seen throuout the week. The number 
of DUNLIN at Benning  was up to 100 today. At Muckrace Flats both YELLOWLEGS 
and a SOLITARY SANDPIPER were found. At Towpath Road 4 BLACK-CROWNED 
NIGHT-HERONS were seen.


Cortland County
------------

    4/24: FISH CROWS have now expanded to the city of Cortland.


Derby Hill Bird Observatory
------------

     5,225 raptors were counted at Derby Hill this week. The big days were 4/26 
with 2,706 birds and 4/28 with 2,220 birds. On both days BROAD-WINGED HAWKS 
made up the bulk of the numbers with over 2,000 counted each of those days. 
Other highlights were 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW on 4/24 and 
a SANDHILL CRANE on 4/28.


Phillips Point (Oneida Lake) Lakewatch
------------

     The first BRANT was seen on 4/26. 127 COMMON LOONS were counted on 4/30. A 
FISH CROW continues to be heard. More COMMON TERNS were seen this week.


Madison County
------------

     4/25: A GREATER YELLOWLEGS was seen on Bee Bee Bridge Road near Canastota. 
An ICELAND GULL was seen at Ditchbank Road and 15 PIPITS were seen at the turf 
farm above Chittenango.
     4/29: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at a feeder on Carpenter Road in 
Georgetown.


Onondaga County
------------

     4/25: A GREAT EGRET was seen on Dead Creek west of Baldwinsville.
     4/26: A SORA was heard at Dewitt Marsh on Fisher Road.
     4/29: A LEAST BITTERN was heard at Dewitt Marsh on Fisher Road.
