No disrespect intended, but I would say that you should have been aware of the potential issues.
"Lazy" and "incompetent" are strong terms. Perhaps "irresponsibly negligent" is better. If someone spreads viruses because their virus scanner didn't tell them they had to update it, that's negligence. If someone doesn't patch IIS and spreads CodeRed, Nimda, et al, to everyone and their dog, that's negligence. Negligence and innocence are not synonymous.
