No, Satan exists...not necessarily because of any Gnostic/dualistic
requirement for a Principle of Evil to balance the Principle of Good, but
simply because so many people believe he exists. The more we focus on evil,
the more we become obsessed with it, the more we proclaim a culture war
against immorality...the more power we give to the devil we have created by
our belief in evil. This is the Tar Baby Principle: you are attached to what
you attack. Without the devil, the Church is meaningless; the Church *needs*
the devil, just as Kenneth Starr needs Bill Clinton. To quote the apocryphal
Wisdom of Solomon, "Do not invite death by the error of your ways, or bring
on destruction by the works of your hands; For God did not make death, and
he does not delight in the death of the living. He created all things that
they might exist; the creatures of the world are wholesome, and there is no
destructive poison in them, and the palace of Death is not on earth. For
righteousness is immortal." The more we look for evil, the more we will
find...and the stronger evil will become. Far better to live in the virtue
of that life and power that takes away the occasion of all wars and all
hatred and all greed, to look for good and peace and love and thereby
strengthen *their* presence in creation.
