Well, at least it's not Essential.

E.g. base-files (Pre-)Depends simply on the virtual Package awk, which
is provided by all three implementations.

There also seem to be much more packages which depend on e.g. gawk (66)
than on mawk (16).


So if your awk snippet runs with all implementations, why not simply
depending on awk... and use the /usr/bin/awk alternative?
