Perhaps a good case study of such a split is the modular X effort which broke the monolithic x.org build into separately buildable projects. Even as a non x-hacker I found that really helpful, I could now just build e.g. libXau and debug into it to figure out valgrind warnings and usefully patch it to fix them and submit those fixes back. Something I certainly wouldn't bother to have done if it was still a monolithic multi-hour build as it just wouldn't have been worth my while.
