Stuff in the Cassandra world worth knowing about:

- Cassandra 2.1.19 and 2.2.11 are out. 3.0.15 and 3.11.1 are voting, but
should be out next week.
- There's been a pretty lively discussion about experimental flags
(especially for materialized views), if you somehow missed that (?!), can
catch up on it here:
https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/d81a61da48e1b872d7599df4edfa8e244d34cbd591a18539f724796f@%3Cdev.cassandra.apache.org%3E
- Sylvain suggests removing async read repair knobs
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-13910 - editorializing: he
has a pretty compelling point, and unless someone has a pretty convincing
argument against it, it's likely to happen. If you really really really
believe ASYNC read repair options need to stay, you should go view that
ticket.

7 new contributors had their first commit land in the project during the
month of September (+ early October):

Stefano Ortolani
Stavros Kontopoulos
Sasatani Takenobu
Romain GÉRARD
Cormoran
Vusal Ahmadoglu
Achilleas Anagnostopoulos

Jan Urbański and Jaydeepkumar Chovatia each had their 2nd commits during
that period; always nice to see a follow-up contribution.

Administrative type stuff:
- It's been a year since the PMC last had an election for the chair; Nate
McCall will continue to serve as PMC chair for another year and gets to
shoulder the burden of filing lovely board reports every quarter.
- The project (or rather, the PMC chair) files a report to the ASF every 3
months. These usually fly under the radar, but I'm going to try to point
out when new ones land. The last one was August - you can find it here:
https://whimsy.apache.org/board/minutes/Cassandra.html. It noted, among
other things, that Datastax's donation of cassandra-dtest distributed test
suite made it through the incubator and into the project, and that the
legal hurdles surrounding the RocksDB patent grant were cleared up (see
also: pluggable storage conversations from last week's emails - this would
have been a blocker, the FB folks really managed to work some magic on
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-303 ).
- I'm personally making a list of open Github PRs that need to be closed
(going to submit it to ASF Infra to manually close them for us). If anyone
wants to help cultivate that list, please let me know (if you're not aware,
github is a read-only mirror, so we can't merge PRs through the web UI, and
we can't close them except via commit message)

Stuff that could use a review:
- There's a patch to fix the 'CREATE INDEX' string representation (to add
IF NOT EXISTS) from a new contributor:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-13935
- The big java9 patch: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-9608
- Build.xml cleanup: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-13724
- Patch to allow specifying sources for rebuild:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-13841
- Removing an obsolete assert so graphite reporter works:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-13840
- Making sure all FastThreadLocals are cleaned up properly:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-13838

Until next week,
- Jeff
