I recall having fun with these after reading a chapter about them in a
Martin Gardner book, I'm sure.  Fantastic things. That's quite a nice
little video about them. I think I recall also doing one with square
sections, by interfolding and gluing/taping a sequence of square bits but I
don't recall what shape the overall piece was.

As we established, it depends on the paper being free to flex as the
retaining bands 'flip' over it (or vice versa). I just found you can make a
crude work-alike using a couple of plastic cards and a pair of elastic
bands joining them, putting a 180 degree twist in each elastic band so it
goes over one card then under its neighbour.
