I'm not sure if this is related, but I had a very similar problem.
It mainly appeared when moving or resizing a window. But I did notice it
freezing up my comp every now and then with the xscreensaver's.
If you look back in the posts here you'll see a more detailed description of the
problem I was having. The fix was to use the DRI version of the 3D (and 2D? Not
sure) drivers. As opposed to the XFree drivers. This involved downloading the
DRI CVS, and applying the whole patch by hand (as a few things are different).
After that, no more problems! Haven't had a single lock up since. Apparently its
a bug with the XFree CVS or something... who knows!
