You joke, but EMC2/LinuxCNC is loaded on the PC that I use to drive my sailboats Autopilot via some Linux chart software that creates a heading for my autopilot. The Autopilot is homegrown and runs on a PLC. I considered using LinuxCNC to drive the tiller actuator directly, and there is no reason why it wouldn't work, but a micro PLC draws a lot less power than even a very efficient PC. And since the navigation PC is not always running, the PLC solution is a more efficient and simpler solution - at the moment. But my autopilot/navigation system is in a constant state of flux so next year it might be different.
