I bought a partially converted vehicle and it just came with the
purchase. I have no idea where the previous owner got the Sanden Unit.
I sent him an e-mail yesterday so I will reply back when he responds...

sanden electric a/c compressors a couple years ago and never had any
luck. Masterflux makes an electric A/C compressor also, but as I recall
is quite expensive. Any other alternatives out there?

Is this required for sealed batteries as well?

The install manual with my AVcon has 2 pages of fan installation instructions.
It does say that sealed batteries do not require the fans. Also, it wont charge
a flooded car if it tells you that it's flooded through the avcon digital
interface.

Also how does SAE J1772 fit into this?

Wow, this seems horrible.

A standard that is going to be applied differently by different people,
depending
on the weather.

What if you need your charge station re-certified in the future by a different
inspector? Crazy.

I truly do not understand this requirement, seems so arbitrary.

Wasn't this document for the environment where there are 100s of 1000s of
chargers installed all over the US with grandma plugging them in?

The strange "EV" only cable requirement not withstanding, most of these
things seem like a good idea right?

I guess the fact that Rich does not seem to like anything about this document
indicates that I don't really have a full grasp of why this is bad.

Rich definitely knows more then me about making chargers :)

> Like Why do we need to have the DC side Cable marked ":for EV uses only"

Agreed 100%, why is this? It makes no sense to me.

Just custom imprinted, is that the only difference?
Strange.

Based on the cable requirement? Or just all the details?

Does 625 regulate Level III charging?

One... I am doing a Level 3 plus charger port. speced to 700 amps, and not
more than 600 volts DC.

I started with a Anderson Power Products SBE-700, That is EV cert at 1961 or
something like that. So.. it is already pretty much Ready to go.
The SBEs have 10 Aux low level 20 amp contacts. These will be the RegBuss
with Evil buss. And low level interlocks that will drive the " battery
interface" controls.

The interface controls will allow:
    voltage sense
    polarity sense
Cold make/break of the main contacts
Ground static bleed off( Since the Monster charge is totally
isolated...I don't need 700 amp paths for grounds)
This is a totally over kill connector and latch/ejector system.
But not at the levels that My client Dreams of attaining....

But it certainly gets your attention that I am Not fooling around with
connectors. It's $480 a pair. And already speced as a EV port.

The propriatary stuff is because to meet the letter of Nec 625 you almost
have to have one off cables and connectors. You put that much time and money
on a interconnect system,
and you want to protect your investment.
I Wanna charge Car and LOTS of them!! I fully intend to publish the pin
outs.

There be 10 Aux pins in a SBE-700
6 will be the Manzanita Micro Reg buss.
One will be EV chassis Ground.
3 are left open...

Feel free to type up the pin out.... or I will.....

The main contacts are clearly IDed as + and -.

So make sure I have my install certified on Friday when inspector B is working,
else I may be rejected with an AVcon install?

Crazy.

I have not read SAEJ1772
I suppose I should.

The whole part and it's a major part of the printed Article assumes that
you are charging flooded lead Acid. Like they swiped all the Golf cart and
Fork truck requirements and just slapped them on any possible EV.

Good question... having the inspector you need known and assigned to your
project... would be prudent.

Gramma can plug in the RV... She should be also capable of plugging in her
EV.. with the same level of saftey. Two hots and a ground, That's it!

The whole document has a really strange feel to it. Like the You Shall do
this and that, and it's not a totally accepted article. Then it launches off
into Fan CFMs and other periferal requirements that say, who ever wrote it
was grouping for ideas.. It has a half assed feel that says they wanted to
be the ONE IN CONTROL.. but they may not be, since almost all Ev stuff is
not covered.
So.. it really doesn't come across as a really well thought out document.
This if course fuels that paranoia that it was written to lock in GM's
Magnachargers.. and lock out anybody else's attempts.

Well I see a LOT of my life being eaten up batteling Spec's menship for the
sake of covering some inspector's Arse.

We got around it at my shop... But.....some where's out there is a the wrong
inspector... and a high visability Install from Hell.

Him knowing about my stint on Monster Garage... won't be of any
help...that's for sure.

Actually, I think it is exactly what they intended. As Lee suggests,
Art 625 was written to satisfy the desires of the OEM EV producers (of
the day), and you can bet they weren't at all interested in making it
easy for the little-guy charger manufacturer to make a living selling
charging stations for on-road EVs.

Cheers,

Why was it programmed at the end of the night?
This could make it difficult for people to travel to it, unless

Here in the USA homes, and most accessible outlets elsewhere (the ones with the "more standard" outlet configurations,) have no more than 120vac with respect to earth. Our domestic 240vac outlets are both 120vac ends of a center grounded transformer secondary. I'd be wanting fancy "safer" connectors myself if I was handling 230vac to earth. We generally play with 1/2 the voltage!

The arguable difference here is that gramma does not plug and unplug her
RV from shore power at least once daily, 365 days a year.

While it may be just as safe (or otherwise) to plug in an EV with the
same connector as an RV, the simple fact that it is going to be done
*much* more frequently greatly increases the probability of an accident.
Likewise, a connector that might last years on an RV might wear out and
present a fire hazard within a few weeks or months of use on a public
charging station.

I'm not a fan of Art 625, and don't want to be in a position of
defending it, but I do recognise that it is not unreasonable to have
safety concerns with regard to *public* charging stations that are
likely to be connected and disconnected several times a day, by people
with a wide variety of competence.

Cheers,

Roger.

Is there any way for us spectators to get in early with the participants ?
I sure would like to meet some of the names I have been seeing on this list
over the years.
I would also like to get some close up pictures of the cars.

Thanks;

Hi all
Concerning camping. Yes, camping will be available at the track.
As far as where on the property and what facilities will be available
(washrooms, electricity, water, etc.) we don't know yet. Please respect the
facilities that you do get, as they have had problems in the past with
campers.
The motels are booked solid. Seems that the big oil refineries here
are undergoing a huge maintenance program for the summer. There are 2000
out of town workers that just came in and have taken all the rooms.
So if you did not have a motel reservation, you're probably out of luck.
You can always try on-line.
Here is what I know at this time. Gates open to spectators at 11:00
am. Participants and vendors can enter at 8:00 am. Racing begins about
noon. Prior to that there will be plenty of time for registration and tech
inspection. Track will close at 6:00 PM. Awards ceremony follows
immediately at the track. Then it's off to a pizza place (pay your own)
about a 1/2 mile from track for festivities & bench racing.
Check the web site after Sunday for the latest info.
See ya May 13th

I'm curious, how full have the WKTEC showings been? At the Sundance
film festival (where it debuted) the theatre was maybe 2/3 or 3/4
full (but it was an early morning showing, the afternoon and evening
showings may have been more full).

this law and collection 2002 numbers don't relate to industrial batteries at
all (like EV purpose ones) only AA, C, D and such cells.
Nicad collection from our EV in France is on the 90% side for one reason:
they are rented and controlled strictly at their end of life !

you can find laws texts here sorry i don't have a direct link under the hand

this said, i hope to see a nicad ban one day here, what will be the

Posted for Mike Parker in Turlock, CA.

If you know of anyone interested in taking a C2EC2T
Commuter Conversion Electric Car Class in Encinitas,
California on June 19 to June 30, 2006, please let me
know and I'll send registration material, motel
information, and class description. I'll need name and
street addresses, city and zip, to send printed
materials to them. And if you come across anyone in
the Modesto/Turlock region who is interested in
learning how to convert ICE gasoline cars to ZEV
electric cars, let me know. With gasoline prices
escallating on the heels of oil price escallation,
this unique class should be of interest to San Joaquin
Valley folks. Each stick shift, compact automobile
that is converted to ZEV electric will reduce Valley
air pollution, reduce dependence on foreign oil,
possibly improve employment development.
Also, please put the word out that Mike Parker is
looking for a 1 bay garage with a lift. I'd like to
rent the garage from time to time for 10 consecutive
Saturdays from 8 AM to 3 PM. Complete Commuter
Conversion Electric Car Kits cost about $10,000. The
result is a commuter car that can cruise at 70 miles
per hour and cover 60 to 100 miles on a single charge.
When better batteries are available in a year or two,
these conversions will have a fast charge capability
and a range of about 80 to 160 miles per charge.

The 1980 VW C abriolet that we will convert to
electric this summer in Encinitas, CA, will employ a
144 volt drive battery system, 500 amp controller,
and a 9 inch diameter DC motor. The idea to build a
"performance" electric car belongs to my buddy, Abran
Quevedo, auto shop instructor at SanDiguito High
School Academy in Encinitas. Abran wants to impress
the young high schoolers (and others) by creating a
very fast automobile. We intend to convert the car
and wind up with a 100 MPH automobile. It's per
charge range will be 25 to 40 miles with lead acid
batteries.

No. The whole idea behind waiting to let spectators in is to let
the participants and venders set up. That is a time they should not be
bothered. Lots of pre race work to be done. The only way one can get in
is in the same vehicle as racers and venders. (crew members) There will
be plenty of time to meet and photograph them and their cars during the
day. Your entry into the facilities is also your pit pass. It will be
one big open venue. You can walk around anywhere in the pits (except
staging area) and go up to the stands any time you want.

Lawrence,

I thought we established that heavier vehicles go further ;)

I'd love commuting on an electric motorcycle. My bike only takes about
$13 each week for gas now. Zero dollars would be even better. Half
thought of converting an old Goldwing to an EV. I need the extra
weight of a heavy bike for comfort and long distance ;)

Wow! That is one hell of a charger.

The AVcon level III spec is only rated at
600V 400 Amps max

Not that you would be using the connector even if you could :)

But I guess that makes sense.

Seeing as how you need to purpose build your EV for Level III charging
anyway, and there are no production Level III EVs that can charge near
240Kw out there (that I know of), You might as well make a standard for that.

Thanks!
