I have the same video card, and sound and video was working perfectly with the default kernel in 8.1, I indeed had problems with 2.4.13-2mdk, so just went back to 2.4.8-26mdk. Is your soundcard being detected ok, I am asking this because I am not familiar with this brand name. Try runnind sndconfig (as root) and see if that fixes the problem with the sound.
