After subscribing to Weave Tech and asking a couple questions there, Zack and Bethany took a couple hours to play with the dobby while I treadled. If you can imagine going through a pattern that requires 28 treadle pushes to complete, 4-5 times through, pick by pick, holding down a treadle with an average of 8 harnesses raised while they checked to make sure the right ones were up... well, it's more or less working now.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to keep the thing, so yesterday was a test. For the first time I was able to actually weave something that wasn't so full of mistakes as to be useless. I wove for about an hour, not counting short breaks to wind another bobbin or adjust the weights on the floating selvages, and got one towel done. Now I'm waiting to see if I'm going to be in serious pain for a day, to pay for it! If not, then I might buy the AVL if I can swing the financial side. If pain comes (there's always a delay between stress and pain of about 1.5-2 days, for some reason), then it will definitely be for sale.

I must say, though, it will be a bit dull going back to 8 shaft twills after playing with 16 :)
