Thanks for looking at my problem and for the suggestions.

I tried the second, cleaner approach, and ran for 14 times, but the same
result kept coming back. So then I tried the first, faster suggestion, and
got a version error, as shown in the Terminal extract below.

james-imac:gnucash Caroline$ sudo install_name_tool -change
libgncmod-register-gnome.0.dylib libgncmod-register-gnome.dylib
/sw/lib/libgnc-gnome.0.dylib
james-imac:gnucash Caroline$ /sw/bin/gnucash
dyld: Library not loaded: /sw/lib/gnucash/libgncmod-register-gnome.0.dylib
  Referenced from: /sw/lib/libgnc-gnome.0.dylib
  Reason: image not found
Trace/BPT trap
james-imac:gnucash Caroline$ sudo ln -s libgncmod-register-gnome.dylib
libgncmod-register-gnome.0.dylib
james-imac:gnucash Caroline$ /sw/bin/gnucash
dyld: Library not loaded: /sw/lib/gnucash/libgncmod-register-gnome.0.dylib
  Referenced from: /sw/lib/libgnc-gnome.0.dylib
Reason: Incompatible library version: libgnc-gnome.0.dylib requires
version 1.0.0 or later, but libgncmod-register-gnome.dylib provides version
0.0.0
Trace/BPT trap

Could you please suggest how I can update the library version, if this is
what I need to do.

Thanks,

James Northrop
