GNU pth is a user level (portable) thread library. pthreads is the 
systems "real" threads (and a POSIX standard). In general, for most 
things, pthreads are to be prefered, alas they are not compatible, so 
unless a program explicitly supports both you have no choice anyway.

For zlib, the OS doesn't provide headers, so you have no choice. The 
same for libpcap and some others. As to link to which lib: usually 
not interfering there at all is the right thing, i.e. let the package 
do the pick - usually that will be the Fink version of the lib, but 
in e.g. the case of zlib they will link against the systems version 
of zlib.


Really, there are only a very small number of libraries that are 
provided by both Fink and the system.
