Here is a new book on the future of work, technology and its effects on working people which was published at the end of last year. It was offciially launched at the OFL convention. RE-SHAPING WORK 2 Labour, the Workplace, and Technological Change edited by Chris Schenk, (Research Director, OFL), and John Anderson, (McMaster University).Garamond Press and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives This book is the second of two volumes of original research undertaken by Canadian trade unionists from various unions all members of the Ontario Federation of Labour. (The first volume "Re-Shaping Work", is also available through Garamond Press, was published in 1995). Included new articles by Wayne Lewchuk and David Robertson, Karen Hadley, Julie White, David Sobel, Jonathan Eaton and John Anderson as well as a introduction by the editors. The research (done under the Ontario Federation of Labour's Technology Adjustment Research Program, or TARP), was unique because, for the first time, government provided resources for workers rather than to academics or corporations. TARP was established under the Ontario Liberals in 1990, renewed by the NDP government, andsubsequently cancelled in 1995 by the newly elected Tory government. Nevertheless, new research has been added to this volume. This book will hpefully contribute to a better understanding of workplace change, the role of new technologies, the debate on lean production and empowerment of the workforce, the "information highway," work and the environment, and the possibilities of shorter work hours. Despite the cancellation of government funding for further research, RESHAPING WORK 2 sheds new light on crucial issues of the changing nature of work and technology.
