This is actually the plan.  We discussed this yesterday afternoon and decided 
that there are only a few things that need to be done in gmond before we create 
the 3.1.x stable branch.  Once we create the 3.1.x stable branch, then that 
branch will work towards a release (which will hopefully happen very soon) and 
trunk can be used for new stuff like a rewrite of the frontend.
