Actually, VPI (Veterinary Pet Insurance) now has a plan of coverage for
exotics, including gerbils. I believe it's $7/month per gerb and you can
use any vet. The plan doesn't cover any pre-existing conditions or
well-gerb exams, but will cover emergency procedures including surgery,
