Create a Dataclass with the following: Data Set Name Type . . . . . : EXTENDED ** If Extended . . . . . . . . : REQUIRED ** Extended Addressability . . : YES ** Record Access Bias . . . . : USER *** Space Constraint Relief . . . : YES *** Reduce Space Up To (%) . . : 30 *** Dynamic Volume Count . . . : 9 *** Compaction . . . . . . . . . : YES ** ** = required *** = your values may vary Point your 4gb VSAM file to this dataclass, storage group can be the same since the file requirements will be approx. half of what they are now.

I think what you need to do is to define it as an extended format data set.
