Sorry, you are right. I had been loading the wrong tveeprom module (had been trying to fix the problems through trial-and-error... note to future readers: do NOT try to load the Conexant 2388x (bt878 successor) support in your kernel). As punishment, I double-checked that with the correct tveeprom, I can still capture from /dev/video1 and still get only static from /dev/video0.
