Jim For the most part, an external drive is an external drive. Make sure you get one that works with Windows, USB 2 or 3, the 3 is faster if you have a newer computer that supports USB 3.0 but it will be backward compatible with Usb 2.0.
Unless you get a drive that incorporates automated data backup, no it won't back up anything automatically.
