"One can buy Boyle crochet hooks at Wal-mart today...Sizes such as you describe are quite large and used with yarn or wool..." Betty Ann
Yes, the Boye brand is available almost everywhere. Walmart has a lot of them, but most Walmarts are or have, closed out their fabric and yarn departments (a few left the yarn.) Yarn in the US is used to describe any fiber that is used for knitting, crochet or weaving, etc. (whether synthetic or natural fiber.) In the UK, the word "wool" is often used as a substitute for the word "yarn," as most in Europe has always predominated in wool content. Someone else mentioned that their mother in law gave them hooks, and I commented on the details on crochet hooks, and help in sourcing the finest (smallest) ones. The sizes she mentioned (H & K, if memory serves) were most likely used for worsted and then either a bulky yarn, or very likely an afghan stitch for a narrow afghan band (which typically requires a larger hook that is standardly used for a particular yarn thickness.)
