Seed camp for an annual Gathering
See the web site for workshop, dj, band, performance listings.

At Opoeia we are finally putting together a seed camp (to borrow the
Rainbow term) for an annual event. This time around though we are not
attempting the big festival thing. Rather we are calling out for very
creative/innovative and passionate crews to come together for an event
of about 300-400 punters to set the groundwork for a unique on-going
gathering. We are only aiming to cover costs this time around, so we
will keep the price low at .00 for 5 days. For next year we will set up
a not-for-profit wing of our little retreat to run the annual gig.

Leftlink's News:

: News Articles : All The News That Fits - February 24 - March 1
The Victorian government has abandoned women who are smuggled from
overseas to work in brothels, according to an advocacy group.

Georgina Costello from Project Respect said that the Victorian
government had not delivered new legislation outlawing sexual servitude,
and was not providing funding for the agency.

Ms Costello said that although the agency had Federal funding and there
were Federal laws against the practice, federal laws were ineffective
unless police could prove state borders had been crossed.

: News Articles : Will Vanuatu be Australia's next target?
by Tom Orsag

Since the official end of the war in Iraq, Australia, the former British
colonial settler-state, has gone on to send troops and police to
recolonise parts of the South Pacific, its so-called backyard.

Prime Minister John Howard is US President George Bush's only loyal ally
in the southern hemisphere. Around 800 Australian troops remain in Iraq.
A new US troop base in Australia is being discussed as the US finds its
military forces unwelcome in Okinawa and South Korea.

: General Information : 'Terror' law threatens the right to organise
As part of the raft of 'terror laws' being passed through parliament,
the Howard government is wanting to pass a law in this coming session of
parliament giving the government the power to ban organizations and
prosecute individuals who are involved directly or indirectly in such an
organization. This is a threat to our right to organize politically.

: General Information : Real Learning, Real Futures (an Education Report)
In this useful report, Roger Holdsworth (Australian Youth Research
Centre, University of Melbourne) explores the Real Learning Real Futures
project in the Derwent Valley, Tasmania, which stands out as an
educational model on three grounds: first, it involves ten schools and a
District Office working in collaboration; second, it strongly argues
that students "at risk" should not be isolated into an "alternative"
program; third, it is grappling with issues about authentic learning in
which students are engaged in real and community-based projects.
