What's going on? From the 1st of March, all Leftlink news items will be posted to the web site, and a daily summary will be emailed out to all list members (that's about 600 people). Between now and then, I will duplicate the list and the site, so that all list news will also be posted to the web site. At Opoeia we are finally putting together a seed camp (to borrow the Rainbow term) for an annual event. This time around though we are not attempting the big festival thing. Rather we are calling out for very creative/innovative and passionate crews to come together for an event of about 300-400 punters to set the groundwork for a unique on-going gathering. We are only aiming to cover costs this time around, so we will keep the price low at .00 for 5 days. For next year we will set up a not-for-profit wing of our little retreat to run the annual gig. Newsoverboard examines how the tabloid media is a breeding ground for Hansonism and Islamophobia. It critically scrutinises how the tabloid¹s coverage of the Tampa 'crisis' turned voters away from One Nation and back to the Liberal party to secure a conservative victory. The book is a stinging left hook to far right columnists and shock jocks who are powerful political players masquerading as journalists. Iain Lygo is a social activist and a postgraduate journalism student at Deakin University. He was the Greens candidate for Corangamite during the 2001 Federal election. This is his first book. Most parents would be outraged if you suggested they pay their daughters less pocket money than their sons. And just try telling a 10-year-old girl that her brother deserves more money for the manly task of taking out the rubbish bins than she does for clearing the breakfast dishes. Yet this is the reality these siblings will face when they enter the workforce. While government inaction on paid maternity leave, the failed baby bonus and the crippling child-care crisis have dominated the debate, unequal pay between men and women remains the overlooked nexus of work and family balance. Channels Nine's Sunday show ran a feature story on this issue yesterday. Much time and attention was given to 'father's rights', with little focus or emphasis on the rights of children and their mothers.
