The price of online storage has come down alot. Like about $55 a year for unlimited space. You can create a very strong password with KeePass to use on any encrypted files. You don't even have to remember it so it can be many digits and letters long. The amount of time it would take to break it would be astronomical. Like, not in this lifetime. If you're using AxCrypt to encrypt files, (or whatever) just copy the password from KeePass and then Ctrl + V into the required fields. http://www3.telus.net/Jgen/2008-02-17-keepass.shtml

Remember that all media has the potential for losing data - which is why
people talk about having multiple copies.

Some older CDs (especially the "bargain" ones used materials that did not
last anywhere near the estimated life of a CD (I have some that started
having read problems 3-4 years after they were written). There are also
problems caused by the markers used to write on the label side of a CD. Some CDs have a very thin top layer and that plastic does not provide
adequate protection to the metallic data layer.

Make a new CD backup every few months and the most recent couple of years
will be available.

Check the long-term cost of the online storage providers. Some get very
expensive after the first (relatively) small block of storage.

Any encryption can be broken if enough time/resources are used against it,
but people are more likely to go after things that appear to have
immediate monetary value (bank account or credit card numbers, etc). You
can put a (minimally secure) password on a zip file or use Kremlin or some
other encryption tool to provide a higher degree of security.

I'm nervous about DVD/CD for backup media. Maybe this was just because
it was some years ago, but I stored a lot of files on a CD, and when I
tried to open those files recently, the CD was showing no data there
at all.

Has anyone had experience/opinion on the web services that provide
backup for your entire hard drive, such as Carbonite?

Does the encrypted file idea that someone proposed take care of the
problem of data security on the gmail server? Still hoping for some
instructions on the how-to for that.
