And just to throw another reason for two marriages out there...my great-grandparents married on a dare in the next county over, then, went home to their families and had a real wedding a month later with the pastor and all the families. I have both the marriage licenses and returns. Reportedly they never told her mother, who would have been horribly shocked. This occurred in Utah in 1920.
