It's not a matter of SLES9 supporting mainframe tape drives, it does. But rather if the application software will support them (mostly not).
You can TAR to a mainframe tape drive. Oracle backup? Nope DB2/UDB backup? Nope TSM? Gotta be kidding. There is no Linux based tape manager that I've found that will support a escon/ficon attached tape drive. However, you might be able to work a VM based tape manger with a Linux agent to backup Linux files. We are biting the bullet and getting FCP attached tape drives. $25K for a pair of IBM 3592-E05 $2,300 for a FCP card. $5,000 for a SAN switch Tom Duerbusch THD Consulting Law of Cat Elongation A cat can make her body long enough to reach just about any counter top that has anything remotely interesting on it. >>> "Collinson.Shannon" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 1/15/2008 2:23 PM >>> This is cross-posted on the linux-390 and ibmvm listservs... Is there a manual or webpage somewhere that references all the types of hardware that will work under various versions of zLinux and zVM? Or could someone tell me where I could confirm that a Magstar 3590 model E11 standalone tape drive would work under zVM 5.3 and/or SLES9 SP3? We're new to the zVM/zLinux world-just finished with our POC and now trying to ready an LPAR for production use-and didn't realize till just recently that we'd need a tape drive to do a standalone dump of the zVM lpar. We have some no-longer-in-use 3590s available so thought we'd put them on the lpar as a temporary solution, but don't know how to ensure they're supported. Thanks!
