Lika;

I would say the chances are slim. Look on any of the Laptop support
pages for more info. The thing to look out for on the older Laptops are
non standard chipsets or chipsets that are not fully supported. In any
event the ram alotment is to small.

This may be a nice machine to run in command line mode. If you go this
route look around for one of the slimed down versions of Linux. You
could also try to slim down a version of Linux yourself, but for a Laptop
this old I would not put alot of effort into it.

You can get the G200 setup by downloading and installing the latest version of
X11
( I think it is 3.3.3.1 ) or you can get the Mandrake 5.3 cd which uses Red Hat
5.2 , KDE & the new X11 version or Suse 6.0 has it to and the latest kernal
also .

Hi Dan;

I happen to catch this thread and can tell you this much, with the new kernel
(2.2.3-2 a redhat RPM) all I had to do is an insmod to get the aic7xxx driver
working. Very easy indeed. Now I'm not sure about your specific chipset
but I can tell you that I have an ASUS P2B which has an aic78xx of some sort.

To be honest I would not try to connect to this chipset without Kernel 2.2.3 or
an upgraded drvier for the old series of kernels.

I have the same hard drive in a Gateway G6-450. I'm running Redhat 5.2 with
its kernel (2.0.36, I think), and I had to pass append="hda=1757,255,63" to
LILO and to the boot disk when I was installing for it to recognize the full

Yes and I agree. We need to smooth the rough edges and make the tools
easier to use. This way the new users discovering Linux can exploit

I'm planning to buy a HP scanner to use under Linux. My system already
has a 68pin Wide SCSI card and I really don't have any free ISA or PCI
slots. The HP scanners I saw had a 50pin SCSI port. Is it possible to go
from 68pins to 50pins via a cable of a coverted? Does anyone know where
I can find one of these beasts?

Thanks. Please email me any response.

And unfortunately, IIRC, it's so starved for memory bandwidth that it'd
run faster if you took one of them out. This is the "MIPSFair" machine
that was built from a small SMP VAX, right? Where the VAX types who
built it didn't understand that if you had a CPU that could actually *do*
anything, it might have nontrivial memory bandwidth requirements? :-)

No, it can't! Not unless you tear the CPU boards out and put the ones in
from the similar VAX. And even that might not work.

Subject: Re: Xcdroast, hp7200i IDE not mounting problem
Date: 19 Mar 1999 13:54:46 GMT

I've found my solution, after reading the NG. append="hdc=ide-scsi" is
a helpful hint. NOTE it is "ide-scsi" not "scsi-ide".

The trick is to use modules, I have
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR_VENDOR=y
CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SG=m

Now, recompile the kernel, install new kernel and modules.

Case 1: You don't need CDR, just normal Linux

You are already done. No extra step need to use /dev/hdb, /dev/hdc as IDE-CDROM.

Case 2: You need CDR[W],

Just copy the lilo.conf entries from original one to another one, have
it named linux-cdr, e.g.,

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.3
        label=linux-normal
        root=/dev/hda6
        read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.3
        label=linux-cdr
        root=/dev/hda6
        append="hdb=ide-scsi hdc=ide-scsi"
        read-only

Re-run lilo and now choose linux-cdr in bootup. Now both IDE CD will be
emulated as SCSI CDROM/CDR.

Fireup xcdroast and dance :-)

I have an extra script that works with RH5.2, put it in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.
So you don't even need to manually type 'modprobe ide-scsi'. Work even for
both case 1 and 2.

--cut here--
#!/bin/sh

# Set the path
PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
export PATH

# we use convention of linux-whatever-version-cdr
# whenever -cdr is found, we believe we need the emulation
#
echo -n "Checking for ide-scsi emulation..."
if grep -q -e -cdr /proc/cmdline ; then
        echo "found"
        modprobe ide-scsi
else
        echo "not found"
fi

Well, that seems to be one of the 'problems' w/ most distributions. Used to be that
if you wanted to use RedHat, you were more or less on your own, since the RH manual is
not nearly as detailed as the SuSE manual, and all the documentation was on Slackware.
 Now, w/ RH being the one in the limelight, a lot of software is being written on a RH
platform, and subsequently the documentation seems to be RH oriented. FWIW, the
documentation you need may be available on your system, if you installed a lot of the
doc package. The full text ht://dig system may need a little tweaking to set up, but
it's worth it.  I do wish there was a little more info on the capabilities of YaST;
I've learned several things on it by accident/trial & error.

Hello everyone,

 I have a problem with my Linux and a Win95 PC box I want to use to log
in using a null modem. I had the setup working on my old Slackware
install but I have installed Red Hat 5.2 and I just can't get it to
work... (yeah, yeah, I should have kept a copy of my config files)

 Anyhow, here are the files I have as of now:

/etc/inittab
t1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS1 DT9600 vt100

/etc/gettydefs
DT9600# B9600 CS8 CLOCAL # B9600 SANE -ISTRIP CLOCAL #@S login #DT9600

 In fact, I did get this to work for a few minutes but it crashed during
a file transfer and it now refuses to work. I have cheked the running
processes and the getty is there. If I kill it and restart it, I will
see the login prompt show up on the Win95 box but I can't enter
anything. Do I need any other files in /etc/default to get ttyS1 to
work?

 I have double-checked and this is not a problem with the echo setting,
I have tried to do a login even tough nothing happens and I can't get
the HD to spin. The FAQs did mention to similar problems and refered to
the IRQ settings but I know for a fact this was not changed since my
Slackware install.

 Any help will be appreciated.
 Regards,
 Patrick

If destination (i.e. /dev/hdb1) has been created with the exact size of
source
(i.e.: /dev/hda2), then starting with boot floppy and root floppy you
can try
this:

        dd if=/dev/hda2 of=/dev/hdb1

Good luck.

look on the card and see which chipset it is using. i have a d-link
dfe-500tx and it's a dec tulip 21140. yours is some other chipset.
find that out.

Could be a bad graphics board. Do you have access to another card to try and
see if you still have the same problem?

I may be wrong, it could be anything. I know on my brothers P-II his
AGP graphic card went bad and he started getting a "Missing or corrupted file
command.com" when he booted up. He switched to a new card and Windows boots
up fine. Can't remember what the AGP card was, been awhile. Been trying to
get him to use Linux. He's started to get really frustrated with Win 98, so
he may be ordering SUSE 6.0 like I did.

Michael.

Subject: Anyone have any experience with Intel DK440LX motherboard?

I recently stumbled across the Intel DK440LX motherboard which
provides dual pII capability, onboard SCSI, sound and ethernet. Best
of all they can be had as cheap as $130! This almost seems to good to
be true -- somebody pinch me please!

I'm pretty sure the SCSI is supported in Linux since it uses the
Adaptec 7895 chipset, but I'm less sure about the ethernet and
"Soundblaster Compatable" sound. Has anyone used this motherboard?
What have your experiences been with it?

Thanks in advance...

IMO, it doesnt matter that much, samba is available for all of them,
and thats what you'll prolly be using (supposing the workstations are
WinDoze).

OpenBSD vs. FreeBSD: OpenBSD places their strength on Security and
Stability, while FreeBSD/NetBSD is more of a 'hack' (which doesnt
necessarily mean it is worse than OpenBSD.

Also with LINUX you get -according to distribution -some configuration
editors which make setup/adding/removing programs a bit easier.

Ethernet card IP setup in RedHat 5.2

I have 2 linux boxes at home. I installed RedHat 5.2 off of 2 differnet
CD-Roms. The first one works mint. The other one however is having problems
getting onto the internet.

The IP,DNS,subnet mask is OK. Default gateway is ok as well

After it boots up the eth0 is initialized and ifconfig shows all correct
info,,,except irq and DMA address which I am not sure what they are so I
tried 10 210-300 and it didn't change anything.

I can ping the static IP assigned to the card but nothing outside the box
includibg the default gateway nor the other box that is humming in the same
IP block connected to the same HUB.

The NIC is OK because the box is dula-booted into 95 and 95 is flying on the
net with it.

What else can I do????

If you have any suggestions please post them.

Thanks

Here, here! The early Borland C++ was a truely wonderful environment to build
in, then they went down the MS route and lost it...

Still, they did at least give us Delphi - who needs anything else???
