hi there,

i've installed RedHat Linux 7.1 with kernel 2.4.4 on my compaq armada, it works great,
but
there are 2 problems

1st problem, the battery works for ~30 minutes only (it's not defective)
i've activated all relevant PM settings in the kernel ...

2nd problem, i don't get the IRDA port working, 'findchip' finds
absolutely nothing :-(

is there someone out who can help me??

kind regards

The SCSI bus can host a variety of non-disk devices, too, and disks
are handled similarly for each adapter, so adapter and disk support
are completely separated -- but of course disks are dependent on the
adapter.

Check what you see in /proc/scsi/scsi and /proc/scsi/ncr53c8xx/0 (just
"cat" them). The first should list the devices deteted on your SCSI
bus(es), the second should give a detail view about your adapter.

Err, this is a really difficult question to answer unless we know what
your needs are. How much data are you talking about? What's your budget?
Is speed critical (how big is your backup window)? Are seek times
important (i.e. pulling out single files vs. entire images)? Details,
details, details.

>From some recent reports I've heard, Exabyte as a company is on the ropes
and doesn't have much of a plan for getting off them. I've seen a few
(very knowledgeable) people recommend against Mammoth2 drives partially
for that reason (although there seems to be a reliability issue as well).

All that being said, here's a data point. For nightly backups of about
43 partitions of varying size, I use an Exabyte Eliant 820, bought recently
to replace an aging 8505 (thus why *I* went with Exabyte for that one).
That drive does 7GB native on cheap (~$5) tapes, and does hardware
compression.

For monthly archival backups, I use a Sony SDX-300C, an AIT-1 drive. AIT
is a Sony proprietary technology, but Sony isn't in any trouble and has
a solid roadmap for AIT. The AIT-1 does 35GB native on expensive (~$70)
tapes. AIT-2 drives (currently available) do 50GB native. AIT-3 is
around the corner.

I haven't had much luck with DAT drives, but, then again, I haven't used
many of them. YMMV. Give us more specific needs, and we can give you more
suggestions.

hardly fair. It'll run linux better than it'll run (*cough* *cough* can't
seem to get the word out)

IME USB doesn't work without USB ports :-/

the only problem I can see is there's potentially a problem with the CDROM's
controller, you don't tell us what it is, but I doubt that'll be a problem.

Hmm? It seems a waste to throw it back into a Microsloth machine.
Not so much as just leaving it on the desk, though!

Thanks for the feedback.

I forgot to mention I got this card for free! I came across a partial carcass

Daniel, try finding the Text-Terminal-HOWTO which you should be able to find
on www.linuxdoc.org, there's probably even a German translation of it :)

BTW, English is probably the best language to use on this NG, considering
how many people speak it compared to everytnig else...

If you have an onboard gameport (even if it is disabled) it doesn't work
correctly under Linux. The solution is to disable the gameport on the
SBLive and reenable the onboard gameport and use that one.

I know this because I lived it. Forget where I finally found the answer.

Good luck,
Ken

Hi' Sten

I assume everything is connected, and that you've tried to turn the
printer on and off. We have that model of OKI at work and I seem to
recall that it actually emulates a HP laserjet one of the old models (HP
laserjet 5 or something like that), unless I confuse it with another
model... Is it a "real" laserprinter (not one of those dependent on a
windows driver to manipulate the printer hardware? If that's the case
much is O.K. otherwise you're out of luck in an Linux enviornment.
Anyway I personally swiched to SuSe 7.1, I did run RH 5.2 once, I can't
help you with RH configuration, but in suse the config tool can't find
my HP 670C either (eventhough I configure it maually) everything seems
to work allright anyway(!) (once I swich the printer on and off in YAST
- the setup tool) so there might be something wrong or the config tool
may just be slightly buggy. If something IS wrong try the HP stunt.

Sound like a problem for the driver howtos. You are going to build a
device/function out of your parrallel port and you want to be able to
control inidvidual bits as discrete outputs. You may find it simpler to
use an ISA port on a machine as several vendors sell empty prototype
boards with the decoder logic already on it. It's a lot simpler to send
a word to an address using assembly with a fixed address that way and
this can be done in c as well. I did this using an old 8088 PC in my
school days to toggle LEDs during a microprocessor course - an
electronics class back in the mid eighties. We used DOS, Masm and an ISA
decoder board we built in class.

/dev/hdb is screaming, "I'm about to experience a mechanical failure!
Back everything up *NOW* and seriously consider replacing me!" You may
just have inadequate cooling in/near this drive; if the drive runs
appreciably hotter than /dev/hda then consider another case fan. Disks
can and will crap out at the least convenient times. If uptime is
critical for this box, consider RAID-1 so you can schedule downtime
instead of having to panic.

Subject: Acer 620UT USB scanner problem
Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 01:30:00 GMT

I just tried to scan an image using The Gimp and my usbscanner and it didn't
work. It had been working prior to upgrading to 2.4.1 kernel (Acer Prisa
620UT USB).

The preview and scanned images looking like it's been put through a
shredder. Gray-scale and Line Art work fine. Only color is affected.

What I find odd is that the upgrade fixed my HP812C USB printer but broke
the USB scanner. Go figure.

If it makes any difference, IIRC the only thing I've done recently was
upgraded from Gimp1.1.25 to Gimp1.2.1, but it uses xscanimage for the
scanning. I don't recall if I ever did a successful scan under Linux 2.4.1
which I've had for a while now.

Thoughts on what might be going on?

Would appreciate some input on this.
Thanks in advance,
Paul Nixon

In my /etc/modules.conf file, I have the following:

After I connect the camera and turn it on to the PC symbol, I can here

The command I issue to gphoto2 is something like the following:

I think that was about it.

I also installed a program called usb_perms and I can get the pictures
