Hello!
I am looking for Stream benchmarks (for memory
bandwidth)
for motherboards with the VIA Apollo 133/133A
chipset.
We have an ASUS P3V133 mobo that yields
approximately
HALF of the benchmarks than our (older) 440BX
mobos
yield, and this is surprising taking into account
that the VIA
chipset has a FSB of 133 Mhz, while the BX has 100
MHz.
We suspect that there is something wrong, and we
would
like to compare.

Subject: Help with USB mouse
Date: Thu, 04 May 2000 17:30:16 GMT

Hi!
I'm a linux newbie. I've installed RH 6.2, and updated to kernel 2.3.51,
which I'm running at moment.
I have a Logitech MouseMan USB connected to my computer, and I'm not being
able to use it. I read some articles and messages about enebling it, but so
far no success...
RH 6.2, kernel 2.3.51
USB support compiled into the kernel, not as modules: HID support, Mouse
support and Mix all mice into one device support. NOT the USB HIDBP Mouse
support, as I read it's not as good so far.

I did: mknod /dev/usb/usbmouse0 c 13 32

When I try to cat /dev/usb/usbmouse0 , I got a message "no such device". I
know Linux is sensing my mouse, because when I do more /proc/interrupts ,
move the mouse, and do it again, irq 12 (usb-uhci) increases in value, as it
should if the device is being sensed.

So, what more must I do to enable the driver? Do I must to take some more
steps to add the device to the system (usbmouse0) ? Or just mknod should do
it? As I'm a newbie, and a non-English speaking, please the ones that answer
be clear.
My system:
BH6
Celeron 466/66
256 MB Ram
Logitech MouseMan USB

Thanks in advance,
Mauricio

This depends on your window manager. You should be able to iconify
StarOffice with a mouse click. Some window managers also support this
with keyboard.

To get to another console, press ctrl-alt-f2. Most distributions have
different consoles at ctrl-alt-f1 to ctrl-alt-f6 and the first X session
is at ctrl-alt-f7.

Hi Sian,

one day I found this link on freshmeat and it is "What are you looking
for"

http://www.Wolfsburg.DE/~rauch/sane/sane-umax.html

but UMAX Astra 2400S come with very cheap SCSI card which suppose to
work
in Linux but I couldn't manage to make it work. I' probably will try to
find another SCSI cable for NCR875 SCSI card in near future. After that
I'll able
to connect the scanner to my second computer. ( Scanner's end of SCSI
cable looks
almost like for printer - but only SCSI)

About USB model I can not say for sure as I just don't have it but have
a link and
they meantioned there UMAX 2000U. I guess that they was able to make it
work.

http://www.jump.net/~dnelson/linux/usb/

but remember that USB works only in kernel 2.3 and it cery close to 2.4
stable
version at the moment. You may need to compile own kernel to use USB
scanner.

Hope it will help.

Hi pros...

I have learnt that my PCI modem is a stupid and cheap "winmodem".
But I still need help, some to point me in the right direction to get
CONEXANT HCF v90 56K Data Fax PCI Modem LINUX driver.
(VENDOR ID: 14F1, DEV. ID: 1033, IRQ 3, I/O 0x2070, COM2)
I believe there are people having the same CONEXANT HCF modem as me.
Please kindly let me know how you pro. solved this problem.
I have tried the CONEXANT web site... there is no drivers or anything.
Then since I bought the stupid PC from COMPAQ.... I have tried their
site too.
NO DRIVER found.... :(

Thank you guys,
Mun Sing

On many of the Cyrix chips, the number it is sold as is how it runs=20
but the actual clock speed on the chip is somewhat less. For example,=20
the 6x86 PR-120 actually has a clock speed of 100. I wouldn't worry=20
much unless you are experiencing performance degredation.

Subject: Can't get SMC 8432T NIC to work in 6.2
Date: Thu, 04 May 2000 18:20:59 GMT

I've just installed RedHat 6.2. I have an SMC 8432T network card that I'd
like to use, but I can't get it to work.

I've chosen the driver de4x5. I've configured my network so that I can
connect to the Internet through my @Home cable modem, benefitting from some
nice instructions someone wrote up. During boot-up, the network card
detection status is OK (it doesn't say failed or anything). However, after
logging in, and successfully using the network for a couple of minutes, the
whole system just hangs. All I can do at that point is to re-boot. There
goes that famous Linux reliability. :) This happens consistently. For
example, when I ping yahoo.com after logging in, after on average around 100
pings, the system just freezes.

I tried the tulip driver instead, but then I can't connect to the Internet
at all. I also replaced the SMC card with a Realtek 8139 card, using the
rtl8139 driver, and even though the network card status was shown as OK
during bootup, I again couldn't connect to the Internet at all.

Going back to the SMC card and the de4x5 driver again, which seemed to have
a better chance of working, I added options to the conf.modules file,
supplying the IRQ and I/O range for eth0. Actually, it's a bit of a problem,
because the SMC card is obviously made for plug-and-play. I went into DOS
and ran SMC's EZSTART diagnostic program, and it displayed the IRQ and I/O
ranges, and the diagnostic test passed, but I couldn't change the IRQ or I/O
range. The best I could do was to program the appropriate values in
conf.modules. However, when I did this, and tried to use the Internet, I got
a network unreachable error.

Next, I went into my BIOS (where plug-and-play was always disabled, by the
way), and kept reserving different IRQ's so that a new IRQ would be chosen
for the card. However, none of the other IRQ's worked, either. And frankly,
there shouldn't be any conflicts because the only cards I have in this
bare-bones system are a video card and the NIC.

So, I'm kind of stumped. I checked the Ethernet FAQ, and read about some
issues with SMC cards, but none fit this bill. Anyone have any offbeat
ideas? I'd really appreciate anything. I remember reading a post when
searching on deja that another guy also had a similar problem with the 8432T
and RedHat, but never got anywhere. It's a pretty common card, though, so
that's pretty strange. Anyway, please keep in mind that I'm still a Linux
beginner, so keep it in English :).

Thanks very much!

It's the same OEM Win9x that all other manufacturers use. The difficulty
with these machines isn't Windows itself, but in the drivers needed to get
everything working. The big boys often use "tweaked" hardware for which
standard drivers from a chipset manufacturer's website might not work, and
some of them don't provide drivers on their own websites. (IBM is usually
pretty good about supplying drivers, but Compaq is hit-or-miss, especially
with Presarios.)

>I found out (much to my chagrin, that a format, then install a "normal"

I nuked a Presario 305 recently and put a normal Win98 install on it. I had
to go to other companies' websites to find drivers for the modem (Lucent),
video controller (ATI), and audio (ESS chipset, but they didn't have the
driver...found a driver that worked at Toshiba's website, of all places).
It works better now than when it was originally purchased...got rid of all
the extra crap that Compaq preloads on its computers.

(Of course, the best approach would've been to put Linux on it, but this
wasn't my computer. :-) )

>I believe there is something in the BIOS which detects the presence of the
>HP version of Windows.

There's nothing of the sort. I don't think I've run across a computer yet
that's so brain-damaged that it won't take a standard Win9x install. (I had
to install Win95 before Win98 on a notebook once to get support for its
goofball IDE controller, though.)

For what they're intended to do, the restore disks provided by HP, Compaq,
et al. work OK. There is more than one way to get Win9x (or Linux or
[insert your favorite OS]) running, though, just as there's more than one
way to flay a feline. :-) It just takes some experimentation on the trickier
setups.

Thanks, but it was already there.
Here are the zip lines in the fstab.
/dev/zip /mnt/zip vfat noauto,user 0 0
/dev/zip /mnt/lzip ext2 noauto,user 0 0

More information:
hda is my hard drive
hdc is my cdrom
hdd is my zip

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the partition check is done before
fstab is read. The only other thing I can offer is that my zip is
OLD. It is one of the IDE ATA (not ATAPI) zip drives. Not even the
same geometry, but it worked fine in 2.2.12.

I will probably recompile the kernel to see if RedHat missed an option
I need. Any suggestions for the options?

Thanks,
Billy

Do you really need that many channels? It's nice, but with only 5
drives I doubt you would saturate even one 80 Mbyte/sec. channel. (The
half-power point being 40 Mbyte/sec., and drives providing 8-10
Mbyte/sec. each).

For servers, SMP is better than a faster single processor. But it's
always a trade-off, and the lower bus speed will have an impact.

BTW, it appears that the Abit board(s) is(are) stable when used with
SCSI -- see http://www.linhardware.com/db/searchproduct.cgi?name="abit"

Hi -- I have a CONEXANT PCI v90 56K data fax modem that I purchased under
the AOpen brand name. I had to take it back. There is no support for
this modem. At least AOpen was good enough to tell me that on their web
site. However, they do sell an ISA modem that worked almost instantly.
I don't know if Compaq sells ISA CONEXANT modems but if they do it will
work.
