Fair enough to suggest nisdomainname - and yes it is correct.It's called being a geek, and there's nothing wrong with it ;-)
Also a good suggestion for hosts.deny & allow ! Even though I have checked this... after double (or was it triple) checking the setup, I realise that I used a network+host wildcard for my "who's allowed in" string and I now find that if I explicitly allow the nis client it all works!!! Hurray!
