Simon,
Kuerchner and Kathedrale were definitely still making strings; the
other big European producer is Toro (making, I believe strings for a
number of different string sellers, Baroco, Universale, and possibly La
Foillia; although Guy Corquoz of La Follia may have begun making his
own strings). Oh I am forgetting Georges Stopanni in the UK.
In the US, Dan and Damian are still at present active, I understand.
The very serious problem, however, seems to be that just a very few
producers of raw gut (perhaps just two) remain; and this means that
production is constantly at risk of a new foot and mouth, or other
epidemic; and if quality falls, there is no one else to turn to. It
doesn't matter how many string makers remain, if the source of good raw
gut goes, then gut string making will be at serious risk.
Apparently, it is almost impossible (due to legal set-ups, and possibly
the skills involved) to develop new raw gut producers.
The proof of this seems to be that Dan has to source beef-gut from the
EU, while the US is itself a huge beef producer.
I don't know what petitioning or lobying could help change this
situation. We should of course support any such action.
   Best wishes
   Anthony

Does anyone know if Kuerchner in Germany is still making gut strings?
   Or Kathedrale (?).
