If you have a user TEXMF tree (~/texmf) defined in texmf.cnf, you can put the bib files in ~/texmf/bibtex/bib/ Another possibility is to set the BIBINPUTS variable. For example, for tcsh, add the following lines to ~/.tcshrc setenv BIBINPUTS :/home/foo/bibfiles/
