Yup. My sentiments exactly, Alan. You think you've lost it all and then you get a "reprieve" when you see your house still standing. And in my mind, I thought, "heck, since none of this is ever going to fit into a safe deposit box - and what would be the point anyway of storing and hiding things away if I can't have them on display? - I did a serious pivot of getting rid of a lot of large format items. The idea of displaying is a constant reminder of being surrounded by material things you can't take with you - but that you can enjoy while we're shot through the universe. And then it happens - you say to yourself - (or at least I did) - "now's the time." And I started selling off everything.
Just this week I shipped off my entire high-grade Beatles vinyl album collection for consignment. It was just twenty albums but those suckers weighed nearly thirty pounds! Biggest and heaviest box I've shipped in years. With just ten minutes - both times - we grabbed wedding pictures, our pet cockatiel and about eight to ten one-sheets and window cards, including Gilda, IAWL, City Lights and Casablanca - and left everything else behind to "burn." I picked up my silver baby rattle that I’d recently found in a box of goodies. I put it in my pocket and walked out with the first toy I ever had. Seemed fitting. After the first item you bond with, everything else is icing on the cake. Out of the canyon I waited and wondered for a couple of days if my world was still there. In some way I had said goodbye to all my stuff. And the oddest thing… when I came back and everything was intact and safe - I found I had to re-acquire it in my mind. And to feed my nostalgia - I can always look at photos of what I used to own "back in the day." So I would say that my collection was likely a "mid-tiered" one - representing titles I really loved. * Another aspect of getting older and divesting - is I can now show "a little bit" of what I used to own - without worrying about security issues - esp. now that the "gold" is gone.
