Ross, sounds like you need more help with the analogies, so 
this is how it works:

        Microsoft is like the Republican Party- doesn't give a rip 
about anything but profits and control.

        Apple is like the Democratic party- kinda moneyed, but 
provides a great product, values diversity, and doesn't really care 
if you buy Appleworks or not. They may need a bigger market share to 
survive though.

        Linux is like the Green Party- kinda flakey but down to earth.

        Palm, DOS, Atari, BEOS, etc.- more little 3rd parties, 
defying Microsoft's domination.

        Microsoft and the Republicans have lots of resources on their 
side and with no unified opposition will probably control their 
realms for years to come. To survive, like Apple's move to an X 
platform the Democrats, Greens, and Independents have to work 
together. I don't think the Green Party's "party crashing" antics are 
a step in that direction, and such sabotage of another left party 
makes as much sense as the Linux loonies who decried Apple for 
stealing "their" system to make OSX.
