Gary is right.

The interface merge switch basically creates only ONE set of counters.  And
then all traffic is counted in them.

If the switch is not set, then a separate set is created for each one.

It would certainly be possible to create some form of the switch that would
allow a partial merge and then chase the switch through the code
implementing it.  Probably only a few dozen lines.  But it's not there
today.

--merge-interfaces=tap1(eth1,eth2),tap2=(eth3,eth4) type syntax.
